From 1993 to 1999, Jörn Kohlhammer studied Computer Science and minored in Business Administration at Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich. From 1999 to 2003 he worked as a research associate at Fraunhofer CRCG in Providence, RI, USA, in the field of context-dependent information visualization. In 2004, he joined Fraunhofer IGD in the Department of Graphical Information Systems, where he worked on decision-based visualization solutions. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from TU Darmstadt in 2005 and was made an honorary professor of TU Darmstadt in 2015. Since 2004, he has led the Information Visualization and Visual Analytics Department, researching and developing innovative visualization solutions for various industries, particularly in the areas of: Visual Business Intelligence and Visual Business Analytics; Medical Data Analysis of Disease Progression; Public Sector Decision Support; Visualization for Internet Security.
Jörn Kohlhammer is the author of over 50 publications in journals, books, monographs and conference papers. He is a regular member of the program committees for conferences such as IEEE VAST and EuroVis, and he serves as a reviewer for many conferences and journals. He is a member of the IEEE and the German Informatics Society. He is also the representative of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft in the TDWI e.V..
His research interests include decision-oriented information visualization using semantics and visual business analytics.
